When Kaylee made the trip from the St. Cloud, Minnesota area to Novel Images for her senior pictures, she already knew she wanted something different. Instead of the traditional outdoor senior session, Kaylee wanted to stay completely in the studio and create something simple, natural and inspired by the 1990s.


And I was absolutely here for it.


My studio has huge windows, which gave us the perfect natural light for the look we wanted. Rather than creating the super polished, ultra-clean digital look we see so often today, I wanted these images to have a little more character and nostalgia—something that felt almost like we could have pulled them out of a box of photographs from another era.


We started incredibly simple: jeans, a black T-shirt and beautiful window light.

No elaborate set. No complicated styling. Just Kaylee.


For some of the images, I switched from natural light to hard flash. Instead of using a large softbox to soften everything, I intentionally wanted harder shadows and that direct-flash feeling that reminds me of point-and-shoot photography from the 90s. I also used a more film-inspired edit throughout parts of the gallery to bring the entire idea together.


Then came the baby’s breath.


I love how something so simple completely changed the photographs. We used it as a bouquet, incorporated it into smaller detail images and paired it with the jeans and T-shirt for a really organic, understated look.

We also moved between white and gray studio backgrounds, changed into darker denim and a white top, and created a mix of full-length portraits, close-ups and those quieter in-between images that sometimes end up being my favorites.


And then Kaylee brought out the black flapper-style dress and the zebra heels. Those shoes deserved their own moment.


We photographed that look with natural light, hard flash, a director’s chair and my vintage white couch. It gave us this incredible mix of old Hollywood, 90s editorial and modern senior photography all in one session.


What I love most about Kaylee’s gallery is how much variety we created without ever leaving the studio. Some images are polished and editorial. Some are soft and natural. Some have that imperfect, grainy film feeling. Others have strong shadows and direct flash. But they all still feel like they belong together.


Kaylee has such a classic beauty and an incredible sense of style, and she photographed beautifully from beginning to end. This was one of those senior sessions that reminded me why I love getting outside the traditional idea of what senior pictures are supposed to look like. Senior photography doesn’t have to mean a field at sunset.


It can be jeans and a T-shirt. Window light. Hard flash. Film grain. A vintage couch. A handful of flowers. A killer pair of zebra heels. Most importantly, it can look like you.
