This year’s Mother’s Day mini sessions were small, simple, and honestly really special. I had two wonderful families come into the studio for Minnesota Mother’s Day photos, and I loved every second of capturing these moments for them. Erin and her family brought so much warmth and laughter into the studio, while Mackenzie and her little girl gave me some of the sweetest motherhood moments I’ve photographed in a long time.

For these motherhood studio sessions, I wanted a mix of soft elegance and creative depth instead of the super flat lighting style you see everywhere lately. I used a professional two-light setup family portrait arrangement with a smaller softbox to create more depth and separation from the background. That softer directional light gave the portraits a more painterly feel while still keeping skin tones soft and natural. The result was a warm, magazine-quality glow that perfectly celebrated motherhood.

One of the featured setups was a beautiful rustic floral setup using a Kate backdrop paired with floral accents and rustic doors. The floral door photography backdrop photographed beautifully with the softbox lighting and gave these Mother’s Day photoshoot Minnesota sessions a timeless, romantic feel. The warm tones, florals, and soft lighting worked perfectly together for rustic floral Mother’s Day photos that felt classic without being overly trendy.

The second setup was something much more simple and organic — a drop cloth canvas backdrop. These simple canvas-style backdrops have become incredibly popular in the photography world lately because they create such a soft, timeless look without distracting from the people in the image. I absolutely had to incorporate one into these Minnesota family portrait studio sessions. Sometimes less really is more.

And because I’m still a Photoshop nerd at heart, I also added some creative floral overlays to a few portraits. Not everyone loves extra artistic edits, and that’s completely okay, which is why I always deliver both versions: the creative edited version and the clean natural version. But as an artist, sometimes you just get the itch to create something a little more dreamy and painterly, and these sessions gave me the perfect opportunity to do that.

Whether you’re driving in from Willmar, Marshall, Granite Falls, Redwood Falls, or anywhere throughout Western Minnesota or Southwestern Minnesota, my studio is designed to give moms a relaxed, meaningful experience while creating images your family will treasure for years to come.

These sessions reminded me why I love motherhood photography so much. It’s not always about perfect poses. It’s the way a baby reaches for mom’s face, the little smiles between siblings, the laughter, the cuddles, and those quiet moments that turn into memories later on. Those are the moments worth preserving.

That being said, these will likely be my final official Mother’s Day mini sessions moving forward. As much as I love creating seasonal setups and offering celebrate mom photoshoot Minnesota experiences, the reality is that mini sessions are incredibly difficult to sustain when bookings remain low — especially when they are already priced far below a regular family session. Between the studio setup, custom backdrops, florals, lighting equipment, editing time, and preparation involved, these sessions become a huge investment behind the scenes.

I’m incredibly thankful for the families who did book because these sessions turned out beautifully, and I truly loved creating these memories for them.
