This year’s spring mini sessions may have been small in number, but they were packed with laughter, chaos, sweet moments, and pure joy. I only had two families book these sessions, but honestly, they were the kind of families every photographer hopes walks through the studio doors. The kids were full of energy, the sisters were adorable together, the big brothers kept everyone laughing, and the entire experience felt relaxed, genuine, and fun from start to finish.
That’s the thing about family photography. The experience matters just as much as the final images. When families are laughing, playing, being goofy, and actually enjoying themselves during a session, it shows in every single photograph. Years later, those images become more than just portraits hanging on a wall. They become feel-good memories tied to a real moment in time.
These spring studio photography sessions featured two completely different looks in one session. Families were able to move quickly between a soft spring-inspired floral setup and a clean sage green backdrop portrait setup using Savage seamless paper photography. That quick switch between the spring studio setup and the simple seamless paper gave families multiple distinct looks in a short amount of time while keeping the session fun and energetic for kids.
The spring setup brought soft spring tones, warmth, and a classic seasonal vibe, while the sage green seamless backdrop created a timeless, modern look that worked beautifully for fun and candid family portraits. Sometimes the simplest setup creates the strongest connection-focused portraits.
Lighting for these sessions was kept soft and clean using a professional studio lighting setup designed to flatter skin tones while still keeping depth and dimension in the portraits. The combination of soft light, genuine laughter, movement, and natural interaction created exactly the kind of energetic family photography I love capturing.
These weren’t stiff, overly posed sessions. They were joyful indoor family photos full of personality, movement, and connection.
Building a photography business in a smaller region is not easy, which makes every booking feel that much more appreciated.
As much as I love creating themed mini sessions throughout the year, this season also marked a turning point for me. These will likely be some of my final large-scale themed mini sessions moving forward. Creating seasonal studio setups takes a massive amount of time, planning, investment, and energy behind the scenes. Between studio costs, props, backdrops, lighting equipment, editing, and preparation, it becomes difficult to continue offering discounted mini sessions when bookings simply don’t fill the calendar.
So if you missed this year’s spring mini sessions… honestly, you missed out.
The families who booked received beautiful professional images, multiple backdrop looks, a fun studio experience, and lasting memories at a fraction of the price of a full session. My standard family sessions begin at $300, which makes these seasonal minis one of the best values I offer all year.
Going forward, my focus will continue shifting toward full family sessions, milestone photography, motherhood sessions, cake smash photography, and studio portrait sessions throughout West Central Minnesota, Southwestern Minnesota, and beyond. I may still offer occasional seasonal minis in the future — especially during fall and Christmas — but these spring sessions were a reminder that sometimes the people who do show up are the ones who make it all worth it.
