There is just something special about photographing families along the river in Minnesota during golden hour. The sound of the water, the warm sunset glow filtering through the trees, and the little in-between moments always seem to create the most genuine memories. This beautiful family session with Mel, Matt, and their sweet little boy at Swift Falls, Minnesota quickly became one of my favorite family portrait sessions I have photographed in quite a while.
Located along the East Branch Chippewa River, Swift Falls is honestly one of the prettiest hidden gems in West Central Minnesota for outdoor family portraits. The clear flowing water, soft grassy areas, and beautiful natural light made the perfect backdrop for this custom family portrait session.
As a West Central Minnesota family photographer, I love bringing a mixture of creativity and storytelling into my sessions. For this session, I brought along vintage airplanes, cozy blankets, stools, and even a vintage magnifying glass to create a playful and timeless feel throughout the evening. Little Braxton absolutely lit up when he saw the vintage airplanes, and watching him run, play, and use his imagination made the session feel incredibly natural and authentic.
One thing I love offering my clients is a blend of both natural light family portraits and off-camera flash photography during the same session. When we started with more posed portraits and individual moments, I used my Godox AD600 paired with a 32-inch octobox softbox to create depth, separation, and beautiful dimensional light. Off-camera flash helps keep my subjects bright and crisp while still preserving the gorgeous golden sunset atmosphere in the background. It creates that high-end portrait look while still feeling warm, natural, and emotional.
As the session became more movement-focused with walking, cuddling, and playful interaction shots, I switched over to natural light photography. This allows for more freedom, movement, and candid moments without having my poor husband sprinting through the grass carrying lighting equipment behind me all evening. My clients truly get the best of both worlds during their portrait experience — dramatic lighting family photos paired with soft candid natural light moments.
Some of my favorite moments from this Minnesota riverfront family photo session were the simple ones. Watching Mel and Matt laugh together while walking hand-in-hand with Braxton. The cuddling moments on the blanket by the river. The way the sunset wrapped around their family creating the most beautiful golden halo light. And of course, the pure excitement on Braxton’s face while flying his little vintage airplanes through the air.
These are the kinds of sessions that remind me why I love being an on-location portrait photographer in Minnesota. Every location tells a different story, and every family brings their own personality and connection into the images. This session was playful, emotional, relaxed, and full of genuine moments that I know this family will treasure for years to come.
If you are looking for a Swift Falls Minnesota family photographer, a Kandiyohi County photographer, or a West Central Minnesota family photographer specializing in sunset family portraits, creative family photography, and custom portrait sessions, I would absolutely love to help tell your story.
