As a Minnesota photographer serving Southwest Minnesota and Western Minnesota, some family sessions just stick with you—and this one with Tasha and her family at Lagoon Park in Montevideo, Minnesota is absolutely one of them.

This session took place on a busy day filled with back-to-back family sessions. As I wrapped up the session before theirs, I noticed a line of cars parked along the park and had a moment of panic mixed with excitement—are these all my next clients? Sure enough, the moment I finished, the most enthusiastic, smiling, ready-to-go crew walked up, and I knew right away this was going to be a fun one.

This is a beautifully growing, blended family. The kids are getting older, some now with spouses of their own, and one of them with a little boy who completely stole the show. Sessions like this are all about flexibility—mixing groupings, capturing different relationships, and making sure everyone feels included while still keeping things relaxed and fun.

Lagoon Park continues to be one of my favorite locations for family photography in Montevideo, Minnesota. With its open spaces, trees, river views, and painterly feel, it gives families room to move, interact, and just be themselves. It’s an ideal spot for larger families and multi-generational sessions, especially when kids need space to explore.

We played games, laughed a lot, and leaned into movement—exactly how I love to photograph families. I even pulled out one of my favorite kid-friendly tools: a magnifying glass. Letting kids search for bugs and explore naturally creates organic moments, and it led to some incredibly sweet images of the little guy fully immersed in his own world.

One of the most memorable moments came when mom and dad were swinging him between them, laughing uncontrollably. He was having so much fun that it turned into a full-on belly laugh moment—boogers and all. The look on mom’s face was priceless, and while it may not be framed-and-hung material, it’s one of those images that perfectly captures real life and real joy.

From a technical side, this session was photographed using a mix of natural light and one-light off-camera flash. My clients always get the best of both worlds. I’ll use off-camera flash when needed to control light and create clean, flattering images, and then transition into natural light for movement-based moments where energy and interaction matter most. Yes—you absolutely can photograph large families beautifully with just one light when it’s placed correctly and dialed in properly.

We ended up with a ton of images—lots of variety, genuine expressions, and moments that truly reflect this family’s dynamic. More than anything, this session was about creating an experience. Laughing, joking, letting kids be kids, and making sure everyone walked away feeling good about the time we spent together.

Sessions like this are exactly why I love being a Southwest Minnesota photographer. Being trusted to document growing families, evolving seasons of life, and moments that will never happen the same way twice is something I don’t take lightly.
